Schaurté, Louis. Menu from Restaurant Schaurté in the Monopol-Hotel, Berlin for Dinner, June 16, 1900. Printed on mulberry paper, 27.5 cm x 19.7 cm, the menu depicts a Japanese scene of three Japanese women in formal traditional Japanese attire and two children similarly attired with a black-and-white cat in the foreground playing with a ball. The branches of a potted blooming tree frame the dinner menu, the courses of which are offered at a price of five marks. Across the top of the menu, in the branches of the tree, are mounted five cancelled nineteenth century Japanese postage stamps.

Known for his "patriotic offerings" Schaurté (1851 – 1934) also ran restaurants in the Reichstag building. The Hotel Monopol was situated at 99-100 Friedrichstraße, at the Friedrichstraße Station. In The Gourmet's Guide to Europe by Lieut.-Col. Newnham-Davis and Algernon Bastard, London: Grant Richards, 1903, p. 145, Schaurté's restaurant got a very good endorsement both for quality and price, ranking it at the top of Berlin restaurants. This menu for dinner on June 16, 1900 may have been designed to show solidarity with the Japanese Ambassador to China, Baron Nishi, whose chancellor, Sugiyama Akira, was murdered on June 11, by the Boxers in Peking during the infamous uprising. The German Ambassador to China, Baron von Ketteler, was also attacked and killed. (Baron von Ketteler was married to the daughter of H. B. Ledyard, President of the Michigan Central Railroad.) François Massialot was a 17th-century French chef who wrote a number of cookbooks in addition to his well-known meals for French royalty. One of his famous cookbooks was 'Nouvelle Instruction pour Les Confitures' which was a collection of recipes for jams, jellies, fruit dishes, and liqueurs and wines.
This 1740 printing of 'Confitures' was published the same year as Massialot's death and features a charming folding engraving of a table setting at the end.

Louis Liger was a prominent 17th-century French writer known for his works on flora and fauna. He is chiefly remembered for his major work 'Nouvelle Maison Rustique,' or 'The New Rustic House.' Originally titled 'General Economics of Country Goods,' this work went through dozens of editions and reissues following its initial release in 1700. This work covers all aspects of rural life in an encyclopedic form including hunting, gardening, fishing, falconry, wine and beer making, cooking, and bee keeping.

This two-volume sixth edition is filled with 34 fascinating full-page and folding plates as well as 30 in-text woodcut engravings. The 5th-10th editions of 'Maison Rustique' were edited by Henri Besnier.

In 16th-century Florence, there was a rise a style of literature that focused heavily on political satire. One such work was 'Company of the Lesina Dialogues'. This work of unknown authorship describes a group of travelers on the way to Lesina and their conversations. It covers a wide variety of topics including food and recipes, as well as money and finance – things the group sought upon arriving at their destination.

While there are no exact connections between the two, the parallels between 'Lesina' and Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' are evident. Fictional travelers discussing life on their way to a destination.

This edition was published in Orvieto, Italy in 1598. A unique 16th-century work published in a small Italian town.

Saddle stapled printed wraps. Front wrapper contains advertising for The C. E. Osgood Co. Of Boston, "New England's Largest Housefurnishers", and many other advertisements for regional and national businesses throughout the text. This cookbook was issued as a fundraiser for the Hyannis Public Library Association on Massachusetts' Cape Cod in 1895 in an edition of 500 copies. The preface notes that this entire edition sold out quickly, so the Ladies of the Association put out the call for more recipes and more advertisers, resulting in this second enlarged and improved edition.
