Hersey chronicles the horrors of the event in simple, graphic detail in what was originally published as a 31,000 word article in New Yorker magazine in 1946. Just a few months later, Alfred A. Knopf printed it in book form.

The Limited Editions Club published an edition in 1983 that contained a poem by Robert Penn Warren and illustrated by Jacob Lawrence. 1500 copies were produced, signed by Hersey, Warren and Lawrence.
