London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1886. Fine Binding. Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5.5". None. A lovely new edition of Babington Macaulay's significant history of England covering the end of the seventeenth century, wonderfully prize-bound by Relfe Brothers. 'The History of England' covers seventeen years between 1685 until 1702, including the reign of James II, the Glorious Revolution, and the reigns of William III and Mary II.Thomas Babington Macaulay was an essayist, Whig politician and historian. Both of these works are notable for their attachment to the Whig approach to historiography.A new edition, complete in two volumes. In a splendid prize binding for Newport Grammar School; awarded to H. Bunting for the Form V Prize by J. C. T. Heris-Smith, Midsummer 1902. Bound by Relfe Brothers, London; with beautiful marbled endpapers and edges.Acquired from the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an English socialite and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was featured by Cecil Beaton in 'The Book of Beauty'. Amongst her circle were Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Coco Chanel, Salvador Dali, Winston and Clementine Churchill and Nancy Mitford.A smart new edition of this popular history. In a full tree calf prize binding. Externally very smart; a few small perforations to the front board of volume I as photographed; otherwise just minor rubbing. Prize bookplate to the front pastedown of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed
