About This Item

London: Macmillan and Co, 1877. First edition. Cloth. Good. 9.5" by 6.5". Alfred Rimmer; J. D. Cooper. An illustrated First Edition exploring the ancient streets and architecture of England. This is a First Edition of the work, in blue cloth binding with gilt motif showing a street and a church. This work documents ancient streets and homesteads across England, covering places from London to the Isle of Man, Nottingham to Winchester and Wells to Coventry. The author, Alfred Rimmer, was an architect who studied in Liverpool before moving to Canada and becoming Justice for the Peace in Montreal, in 1858. However, the streets of England drew him home in 1870 and he settled in Chester, writing many works on local architecture and homesteads. With many vignettes of British streets and homesteads, throughout. In original publisher's cloth binding with gilt detail to front. Externally sound with slight wear to the extremities. Slight discolouration of cloth to the edges and to the spine. Light bumping to the extremities, with the occasional small closed tear. Hinges slightly strained. Front hinge starting between front endpapers to the head of the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the occasional mark. Good
