First edition of Ptolemy's geography edited by Michael Servetus in Lyons in 1535.

The brothers Melchior and Gaspard Trechsel, booksellers and printers from Lyons who were active between 1530 and 1540, bought the woodcuts of Grüninger's Ptolemy and began to produce a new edition. The text was established by Michel Servet (Villanovanus), from the translation of Pirckheimer.

Servet was a Spanish theologian and physician who had studied medicine in Montpellier. A polemicist who favored the Reformation but opposed Calvin, he had sought refuge in Lyons. Hired as a proofreader by the Trechsel family from 1535 onwards, he also worked for other booksellers and printers who were won over by the new ideas.

He was sentenced to the stake at Calvin's instigation in 1553 for his heretical doctrines.

"Among Servet's additions, it is interesting to notice the lines that he adds to the notice of America and in which he is the first to protest against the injustice made to Columbus. As a good Spaniard, Servet did not want the Portuguese to be given the honor of the discovery.

The presentation of the maps is identical to that of the 1525 edition. On the reverse side, the texts have been recomposed and almost all the decorative woodcuts are present, but in a different order."

The present edition is illustrated with 49 large double-page maps and 1 full-page map. Many have the text on the back, within a beautifully crafted woodcut frame.

For the others, the descriptive text has been removed due to the effects of Calvinism, since Calvin had ordered many copies of the earlier editions to be burned.

27 of the maps depict the ancient world and 22 the new world.

These maps were taken from the woodcuts used by Lorenz Fries for the Gruninger editions of 1522 and 1525.

4 maps represent the American continent.

Some illustrations were engraved after drawings by Durer and several maps represent parts of America. The last map is a planisphere containing America and indicating the winds after a drawing by Albert Durer, it is dated 1522 and signed with the initials of L. Fucs. The woodcut on page 123 showing a sphere after Durer was first published in the Ptolemy of 1525.

The text is further decorated with four large woodcut diagrams.

Very attractive copy of this sought-after work, very fresh, decorated with a ruled and watercolored title in red and green alternated, hard to find in an eighteenth century red morocco binding.

It comes from the princely library of the Liechtenstein with engraved ex libris.

Les frères Melchior et Gaspard Trechsel, libraires-imprimeurs lyonnais actifs entre 1530 et 1540, achetèrent les bois du Ptolémée de Grüninger et entreprirent d'en donner une nouvelle édition.

Le texte fut établi par Michel Servet (Villanovanus), à partir de la traduction de Pirckheimer.

Théologien et physicien espagnol, Servet avait étudié la médecine à Montpellier. Polémiste favorable à la Réforme mais opposé à Calvin, il avait cherché refuge à Lyon. Engagé comme correcteur par les Trechsel à partir de 1535, il travailla également pour d'autres libraires-imprimeurs gagnés aux idées nouvelles.

Il fut condamné au bûcher à l'instigation de Calvin en 1553 pour ses doctrines hérétiques.

" Parmi les additions de Servet, il faut noter les lignes qu'il ajoute à la notice de l'Amérique et dans lesquelles il proteste le premier contre l'injustice faite à Colomb. En bon espagnol, Servet ne voulait point qu'on pût attribuer aux Portugais l'honneur de la découverte.

La présentation des cartes est identique à celle de l'édition de 1525. Sur leur verso, les textes ont été recomposés et l'on retrouve presque tous les bois décoratifs, mais dans un ordre différent. "

L'édition est illustrée de 49 grandes cartes gravées sur double-page et d'1 à pleine page. Beaucoup présentent le texte au verso, au sein d'un encadrement gravé sur bois de très belle facture.

Pour les autres, le texte descriptif a été supprimé en raison des effets du calvinisme puisque Calvin avait ordonné que de nombreux exemplaires des éditions antérieures soient brûlés.

27 des cartes dépeignent l'ancien monde et 22 le nouveau monde.

Ces cartes ont été reprises sur les bois utilisés par Lorenz Fries pour les éditions de Gruninger de 1522 et 1525.

4 cartes représentent le continent américain.

Plusieurs illustrations ont été gravées d'après des dessins de Dürer et plusieurs cartes représentent des parties de l'Amérique. La dernière carte est une planisphère contenant l'Amérique et indiquant les vents d'après un dessin d'Albert Dürer, elle est datée de 1522 et signée des initiales de L. Fucs. La gravure sur bois de la page 123 représentant une sphère d'après Dürer fut publiée pour la première fois dans le Ptolémée de 1525.

Le texte est en outre orné de 4 grands diagrammes gravés sur bois.

Très plaisant exemplaire de ce recueil recherché, très frais, orné d'un titre réglé et aquarellé en rouge et vert alterné, rare en maroquin rouge du XVIIIe siècle.
