Corners a bit rubbed, front hinge just beginning to weaken, brief ink note on verso of front endpaper. 1887 Hard Cover. 591 pp. 8vo. Original brown cloth, gilt titles with unfurling scroll decoration on front board. Includes engraved plates and facsimiles of nine original letters and notes written to Grant and contemporaries. A biography by the Union officer who served on Grant's staff during the American Civil War. Badeau also wrote a three-volume history of Grant's military career, and assisted Grant in the editing of his own Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant. This work focuses on Grant's political and social involvements with such notable people as General Philip Sheridan, Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of State Hamilton Fish, and others.
