About This Item

No place [Yokohama?], no publisher, no date (ca. 1890s). Oblong Folio (12.5" x 15.5"), contemporary pictorial black lacquered boards inlaid in relief with bone, containing fifty hand-colored albumen photographs measuring generally 7.75 " x 10" mounted recto and verso to 25 thick card leaves, with tissue guards interleaved. Forty-four of the images are titled in the negative.

Binding worn: spine perished, boards and ffeps detached (boards remarkably well preserved although lacking two small inlaid pieces), most tissue guards creased and torn, mounts with slight wave and sporadic foxing/ soiling, 3 photos with minute losses at the edges, a few slightly faded or under exposed, most fresh and rich in tonal quality.

Although quite probably a composite album representing photos from different studios, certainly many of the images are from the Yokohama studio of T. Enami.

Presents views in Tokyo, Nagasaki, Kyoto, Yokohama, and elsewhere featuring architecture, temples, street scenes, ceremonies, occupations, Geisha, etc. Those we've pictured include:

"262 Unzen Hot Spring" - "J63 Tea-house at Suwa Park" - "260 Obama" - "Road to Mogi (Tagami)" - "382 Theatre Street, Yokohama" -"315 Fuji from Yoshwara" - "A5 Sacred Bridge" - "L63 Yokohama Park" - "C23 Cutting Rice" - "A102 View of Yokohama"
