About This Item

London: Gollancz, 1987. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good Indeed. 9" by 5.5". Josk Kirby. A smart first edition of this comedic approach to death, set in 'Discworld', a fantasy location created by Terry Pratchett. A first edition of the work in the original publisher's black cloth binding with original, unclipped dust wrapper.'Mort' is a fantasy novel by British author Sir Terry Pratchett. This is his fourth novel set in fictional land, 'Discworld', with this work focusing on the character 'Death', who had previously been a side character. 'Discworld' is Pratchett's comic fantasy series, set on the flat planet Discworld, which is balanced on the backs of four elephants, who in turn are said to stand on the back of a giant turtle. Like many of Pratchett's other works there is an element of comedy. Pratchett tells the story of a teen named 'Mort' who begins to apprentice for 'Death' after failing in the family farming business. The novel follows the experiences of Mort in this interesting profession, where many twists and turns occur as Death sends Mort to collect different souls. In an eye catching dust wrapper by British commercial artist, Josh Kirby, who is best known for designing the covers for all of Pratchett's 'Discworld' novels. With Surrey County Library stamps to the title page. In the original publisher's black cloth binding with original, unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, lovely, with light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and the odd handling mark. The occasional mark to endpapers, with a tidemark to the fore edge of the front endpaper. Barcode sticker to front endpaper. Dust wrapper in excellent condition, with light edge wear. Very small closed tear to the head of the spine of the wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with a small tide mark to the tail of the gutter throughout, not affecting the text. Surrey County Library stamps to the title page. Very Good Indeed

Synopsis

Terry Pratchett's profoundly irreverent novels are consistent number one bestseller in England, where they have catapulted him into the highest echelons of parody next to Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, and Carl Hiaasen. In this Discworld installment, Death comes to Mort with an offer he can't refuse -- especially since being, well, dead isn't compulsory. As Death's apprentice, he'll have free board and lodging, use of the company horse, and he won't need time off for family funerals. The position is everything Mort thought he'd ever wanted, until he discovers that this perfect job can be a killer on his love life.
