About This Item

Boston: David H. Ela, Printer, 1845. Good -. viii, 96 p., frontispiece portrait; 23 cm. Lacking binding. This version ends at page 96; it did not include pages 97-104, found in some copies, which contain poetry, or pages 105-108, found in other copies, which contain "From the South." Howes only includes the 108-page version. This is the least common version of the life of Lewis Garrard Clarke (1812-1897), born into slavery in Kentucky. After escaping to Canada in 1841, Clarke was active in speaking against slavery and dictated his experience, presumably to J. C. Lovejoy (1805-1871), author of the Preface and abolitionist. In Good- Condition: lacking binding; loss and closed 2-cm. tear along fore-edge of frontispiece, without loss of image; upper corner of frontispiece creased and lightly soiled; minor loss at fore-edge of title page; foxing and small stains throughout; solid.
