About This Item

New York: John lane, 1913. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. First edition. Hardcover in light green cloth lettered in white. 357 pp. with eight full page plates by Frank Wiles. A tight, externally generally fine copy, the only real flaw being moisture stains to the lowewr corners of the text, not approaching any of the text. Locke's most famous work, the story of Stella Maris, a beautiful, young heiress living in luxurious isolation, and Unity Blake, an orphaned maidservant abused by her mistress, Lousie Risca. Both women are in love with Risca's long-suffering husband, John. When Unity realizes she will never have John, she makes the ultimate sacrifice... Basis for the 1918 silent film starring Mary Pickford.
