About This Item

LONDON : George G Harrap & Co Ltd, 1919 A very good copy of the first trade edition with Harry Clarke's famous illustrations. This was Clarke's second published work and initially contained black and white plates. It was reprinted 4 years later with the addition of colour plates. Clarke's style beautifully complements Poe's writing. With 24 black and white full page plates (including the frontispiece) and numerous designs (a particularly spooky example at the end of the book). The binding has been expertly repaired and rebacked, providing new matching cloth on the back board, and is very clean and sound, with black titles and decoration to the front board and spine. The spine is slightly browned and there is light surface scuffing. New endpapers have been added. The contents are very bright and clean. There are old printing marks to the back of the plate at p 85 and light spotting to p 96. There is occasional spotting to text pages facing the plates and a tiny scuff on the surface of the plate at p 284 at the bottom inner corner. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.

Synopsis

Tales of Mystery and Imagination , stories by American author Edgar Allan Poe have been compiled by Padraic Colum into a thrilling collection focused on Poe’s suspenseful stories. The first edition compiled by Padraic Colum was published in 1908 by Geoffrey Newnes Ltd. and includes an introduction by Colum explaining his decision to exclude Poe’s poems, comedies, and essays from the collection. A later 1919 edition, published by George G. Harrap & Co., includes 24 full-page black and white plates by famous illustrator Harry Clarke. An album by The Alan Parsons Project was named after the short story compilation and contains several songs based on the tales included.

Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery.
