[Texas] John O. Meusebach Land Certificate. One printed page, 8" x 12", New Braunfels, February 28, 1855, granting the "German Emigration Company . . . six hundred and forty acres of land, as a part of the Premium lands secured to them by the laws of the Republic and State of Texas." Certificate number 15. Signed with Meusebach's printed signature. Printed on blue paper. Minor stains and edge toning, else very good.
In 1845 and 1846, German citizens were promised land by the Adelsverein (German Emigration Company; or the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas) if they emigrated to Texas, in part, to rid Germany of surplus rural inhabitants. John Meusebach (1812-1897), a German noble, was appointed second commissioner general for Texas for the Adelsverein charged with the allocation of 500 acres of land. In 1854, he was chosen commissioner by Governor Elisha M. Pease to oversee the issue of the land certificates that had been promised to the German Emigration Company and their colonists. The original plat map of the Sabino Otero Ranch known as Rancho de Otero and House lot located near Tubac, Pima Co. Arizona containing in all 185.70 acres ,confirmation recommended in favor of Sabino Otero, et. al. The map has been preserved in near fine condition, it measure 15" x 19 1/2" and is accompanied by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior Report, 47th Congress, Senate Executive Document, no. 81, January 30, 1882. Designated as "Rancho de Otero and House Lot." Sabino Otero (1846-1914) became known as the "Cattle King of Arizona" and the land upon which he first lived was originally obtained in a land grant to Torrevio de Otero, his great-grandfather in 1789 and confirmed by the Secretary of the Interior in this Plat map on January 30, 1882 (after the Plat map was completed on July 7, 1881). This 1914 map of now popular wine country Napa County, California shows the county in 1914, with early roads, largely undeveloped, vast open land areas, and natural features. The numbered grid system on this map reflects the Public Land Survey System. Large open tracts of land are identified as ranches, such as Rancho Catacoula, or Rancho Las Putas, Rancho LaJota all of which are large swaths of undivided land. Urban grids are shown in the southernmost part of Napa County, and sections of the southernmost sections of Sonoma County and Solano County. The cities of Petaluma, Sonoma, Vallejo and Napa and Benicia show populated urban areas. A corner of Marin County is shown.

The 1856 letter 15" x 10", folded in half to make 4 pp., approx. 300 words, with small blindstamp top left corner depicting an eagle. The earlier letter is headed "September 18th 1855 Naperville Dupage County Illinois" and ends "Michael direct your letters Nevada County, Nevada post office, California". George writes to his brother Michael in Naperville that he has "seen a good dele sins i rote you they last letter", including a hundred "inshins" and some "Buffellow".
