About This Item
London: J. Johnson, 1792. 2nd edition. Leather bound. Very good. 8vo. Contemporary embossed calf. Marbled edges. [xix], [1], 452 pp.
Boards are detached, and top layer of leather missing from spine. Text block is near fine, with no foxing and only a few dark spots of tanning in margins. Pages are bright and crisp. 7 instances of pencilled underlining or brackets, otherwise the text is completely clean.
From the library of noted collector Edward Hailstone, with his leather armorial bookplate inside front cover. "D. of Grafton, 1793" is signed on title page, which was George Henry FitzRoy, the 4th Duke of Grafton. This copy is listed in the "Catalogue of the Interesting Contents of Walton Hall, Near Wakefield; The Property of the Late Edward Hailstone" (Hailstone, 1891, Item #2663), which mentions Grafton's signature.
This is a second edition of the foundational text of feminism and the women's rights movement, with a near fine text block and a fascinating provenance. (PMM 242).
