The first edition of this collection of poetry and verse by William Shenstone, Esq, uniformly bound in contemporary calf. Being volume I and volume II, which was complete at the time of issue. A third volume was published later in 1769.William Shenstone was a popular poet, with his first collection being published in 1737. 'Poems on Various Occasions' was intended for private circulation only, but as it contained the first draft of 'The Schoolmistress' it attracted wider attention.With an engraved frontispiece to both volumes, an engraved Kingfisher vignette to both title pages, two small engravings, and a folding map of Shenstone's estate, Leasowes.Collated and complete. ESTC Citation No. T92444Signature: A1-A4, B1-Z8; A1-A2, B1-Bb8 Uniformly bound in full contemporary calf. Externally, some shelf wear and rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, joints, and extremities. Some loss to the spine labels. Front joint to Volume I is lightly strained. Front joint to Volume II is held by cords only, and may detach with further handling. Internally, hinges are strained, and front hinge to Volume II is held by cords only. Pages are generally bright and clean, especially considering the age of the work. Good
