Still with the plain white protective paper cover which is a bit worn and torn. [Sir Hans Sloane, (1660 - 1753), was an Irish physician, naturalist and collector noted for bequeathing his collection of 71,000 items to the British nation, thus providing the foundation of the British Museum, the British Library and the Natural History Museum, London. The Sloane Herbarium contains volumes of plant specimens collected on Sloane's voyage to Jamaica (1687-1689). During his voyage to Jamaica, Sir Hans Sloane collected the first plant specimens to be brought back to England from the region. Thick octavo, pp lxviii, 798 + 16 page bookseller's catalogue, printed using two different paper stocks so the first half of the book is a little age-toned and the second half very clean, the hinge at the title page cracked and slightly weak, a few pages slightly carelessly opened but over all very bright, bound in original green cloth, slight creases to the spine head but a good copy. With the bookplate of Kenneth Lazenby, a founding father of the Alpine Garden Society.. First Edition. Cloth. Good.

Frankerae: Leonardum Strickium, 1700. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and seven plates, octavo, pp (12), 419, (60), 70, the hinge at the title page cracking but firm, slightly dusty internally but otherwise good, the pages a little waved throughout (not through damp, more as though they are unpressed), an early paper repair to the rear of the frontispiece, a corner torn from the front endpaper (removing the early signature sadly), contemporary full vellum, age-toned and a bit marked, the corners worn, an inked title on the spine, an armorial emblem of the City of Utrecht blind-stamped on each cover. With the bookplate of the Reverend C.B. Pearson. [Pomponius Mela, who wrote around AD 43, was the earliest Roman geographer. He was born in Tingentera (now Algeciras) and died c. AD 45. His short work (De situ orbis libri III.) remained in use nearly to the year 1500. Illustrated with a stunning tinted lithograph frontispiece, two folding plates of ring growth, octavo, pp x, 235 + 24 page publisher's catalogue, edges uncut, slight age-toning but otherwise very clean internally, the front hi nge is slightly weak and is exposed for about 40mm at the top, original green cloth with only slight signs of wear, the spine head slightly pulled. [A work that seems little-known as, indeed, is the author within horticultural circles. Greenwood had an estate in Hampshire, at Brookwood [Brockwood] House near Bramdean. The tree-lifter was the Colonel’s invention for transplanting trees up to 30 feet in height with their ball of earth intact, a feat the apparatus apparently made possible for a single individual to do at a rate of one tree per day. Two engraved plates (with stains, and virtually detached), pp 432, vii, untrimmed and unpressed, the first few pages rather weak, a small marginal stain to the last 25 pages, otherwise clean internally though rather weak, original boards with a later paper spine and small handwritten label. An over-industrious former owner has erased the printing date on the title page and erroneously entered 1828. [From the library of the botanist and garden historian Anthony Huxley, with his stamp on the front endpaper which also contains a contemporary signature. The authorship is frequently given as the agricultural writer Arthur Young, but I can find no justification for this ? Fussell certainly made no such assertion.]. Second edition. Boards. Fair.
