About This Item

Salem, Massachusetts: Marine Research Society, 1923. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. 76 pp. Octavo. [23.5 cm]. 1/4 black cloth over blue boards. Gilt title stamped on spine. Some sunning to top fore edge. Signs of wear to head and tail of spine, corners, and extremities. Most notably, there is 3 cm tear in the cloth on the back top corner, exposing the boards. Corners bumped. Previous owner's name and small book plates on front pastedown. Pages sunned at edges. Previous owner's notes penciled onto rear pastedown. Endicott was the third commanding officer of the "Glide". When she shipwrecked in 1831, he heard his crew yell in the night "She drags! She drags!". What followed was an extended encounter with the natives of Fiji. This book contains black and white plates of illustrations and photographs of Fijian architecture, teeth, and tools. The author records some of the language that he observed during his time with the natives at the end of the book. Forster 43.
