About This Item

London: William Mackenzie, c.1873. Cloth. Good. 12" by 10". Various. An uncommon 1873 volume I copy of 'Yorkshire, Past and Present' by the English journalist and historian Thomas Baines, bound in two divisions. An informative history of the historic county of Yorkshire in Northern England from the 'earliest ages' till the text's publication in the late nineteenth century. Baine's comprehensive study not only explores the topography of the area and its points of interest, but also details an account of its manufactures, commerce, and civil and mechanical engineering. This text was first published in two volumes and bound in four parts, exploring the history of Yorkshire from 'the earliest ages to the year 1870'. This copy however is a later edition, with its area of study ranging from 'the earliest ages to the year 1873'. This set is lacking Volume II, Divisions I and II. All volumes are undated. Illustrated with engravings of Yorkshire scenes, individuals and buildings. Collated, incomplete. Containing five plates to volume I division I; lacking plate facing 'Address by Mr. Thomas Baines', 'Scarborough', and the plate depicting the 'Town Hall, Leeds'. Containing six plates to volume I division II, lacking plate 'Whitby'. In a uniform cloth binding with elaborate gilt embellishment to front board and spine, and blind stamped detail to rear board. Slight bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine. Fading to spine, more severe to volume I division II. Marking to front board, volume I division II. Front hinge volume I division I slightly split but firm. Hinges strained but firm, split and showing chords to rear hinge, volume I division II. Internally firmly bound, generally firmly bound only to first few pages. Lacking two plates to volume I division I and one plate to volume I division II. Tissue guards to plates detached, but present to both volumes. Portrait plate of 'Edward Baines' partially detached but firm to volume I division I. Pages very bright and clean throughout with the odd spot only to the first few pages. Pages age toned to edges, volume I, division I. Occasional light handling mark to the odd page. Tidemark to lower extremity, from title page to final plate, not affecting image, volume I, division I. Ink stamp marking to lower fore edge of leaf protecting plate 'Sir Francis Crossley' volume I, division I. Ink mark to page 305, volume I, division I. Good
