A lavish edition and one that is and has long been a favorite among Bible collectors. The volumes are very large and heavy. The text is printed in columns almost 14 inches long, embellished by a total of 71 engraved plates and 104 large engraved head- and tailpieces by Landseer, Benjamin West, F. Bartolozzi, J. Heath, W. Skelton, W. Bromley and other have designs by West, Opie, Stothard, W. Hamilton, and De Loutherbourgh.. London: John Baskett, 1717. Elephant folio (20.5 x 13 in). The famous and monumental "Vinegar Bible" also known as the "Baskett full of errors," and generally acknowledged as the most magnificent Bible printed in England.
DESCRIPTION
The text is the King James Version and was printed in large folio by John Baskett at Oxford in 1717-16. The volume is adorned with sixty beautifully engraved head- and tailpieces depicting scenes from the Bible that cover about one quarter of the page, and is also further adorned with engraved initials. This edition is the more elaborately illustrated 'A' variant with two general titles. The first one - engraved by Du-Bose- represents Moses writing the first words of Genesis. Edinburgh: Arbuthnot and Bassandyne, 1579, Folio (12.5 x 8.5 in). An illustrated Geneva Bible, the first Bible printed in Scotland. The printing was begun by Bassandyne, whose name appears on the New Testament title page, but was finished by Arbuthnot three years later.
