Description:
London: Methuen and Co., 1893. Two volumes, octavo, bound in original finely ribbed blue cloth withgilt titles on covers and spines. Volume One is a first edition. Volume Two is a second edition, with the publisher's catalog bound at the back dated October, 1893. The author's first novel became a smashing success, with ten impressions being called for in the five months following the release of the books. Two volume sets are now quite scarce, with this set being exceptionally clean and bright. The name "Eugenia" is written on the front pastedown of both volumes, repeated on the half-titles with the date 1894 in the first and 1908 in pencil on the second. There is a bit of minor wear to the extremities, else a very good copy of a difficult title to acquire in a "two-decker".

Description:
Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, (1907). First edition Bound in blue cloth with beautiful color pictorial pastedown on the front cover. Small quarto, unpaginated. Twelve glorious full page illustrations and ornamental borders in the Art Nouveau style. This book, along with Fanny Cory's Mother Goose, represent a particularly poignant time in the author's family life and both are considered amongst her best work. After losing her first baby in childbirth and suffering other deep personal losses Fanny entered a period of profound grief. She struggled to regain her natural sense of joy, eventually giving birth to three children and creating illustrations that captured her hard won happiness in domestic life. This book is not only an exceptional work of art but a mirror into the artist's home and heart, written and illustrated from her own intimate personal experiences as a mother . It has become a very elusive and sought after title for collectors of finely illustrated books from the… Read More

Description:
Concord N.H.: G. F. Bemis, 1835. First edition, first state with signature mark 3 absent. Bound with the ORIGINAL BLUE WRAPPERS present. Recent cloth backed marble boards, uncut as issued. Scattered foxing throughout, several leaves with slight tears to fore edge, wrappers archivally backed but still a nice copy of Emerson's first separately published book or substantial publication preceded only by contributions to journals and a broadside. The rarity of this pamphlet can be explained by the small number of copies and the fire in the town clerk's office that destroyed many of them. Quite scarce in any condition but especially so with the wrappers as most copies were rebound and the wrappers discarded, losing printed elements important to scholars and collectors. Two elusive pieces of paper, being to Mr. Emerson's Discourse what dust wrappers are to modern first editions.

Description:
London: Cecil Palmer & Hayward, 1916. Quarto, 77 pages, plus publisher's ads. First Edition, in original brown cloth with pictorial cover and pictorial paper spine label. Four full page color plates by Frank Brangwyn, including frontispiece. Beautifully printed in black with a tan ornamental border on each page. ORIGINAL DUST WRAPPER, repeating the cover design of the book as well as the spine label. The book is pristine and the dust wrapper is nearly so, astonishingly bright and unfaded. A few tiny marginal chips, entirely as issued including the original red price sticker of 7/6. Occasionally it will seem to be far easier to locate a limited edition of a book than the trade edition in pristine condition. Such is the case with this book. A superb copy of a handsome book reflecting the Arts and Crafts period of design.

Description:
Westminster (London): Archibald Constable and Company, 1895. Forty-eight volumes, 16mo., uniformly bound in quarter-vellum over olive green boards. The vellum spines are elaborately tooled in gilt with the Scottish lion surrounded by a handsome Art Nouveau design. Top edges gilt. Each volume with engraved frontispiece and title page. This set is fairly common in cloth but quite rare in the deluxe bindings of half-vellum. Aside from some minor soiling and wear, this is a fine treasure of a set, boldly handsome when seen side by side in the library. There are few things more satisfying in book collecting than the mellow warmth and rich glow of smooth vellum adorned with deep, old gilt..and this set certainly illustrates the point!

Description:
Dodd, Mead & Co., New York, 1954 Bound in the original black paper covered boards with yellow lettering. The binding is bright and clean with slight wear to extremities. Evidence of tape residue and offset to prelims and rear pastedown. Rear free endpaper excised and last blank leaf with large tear and soiling. The dust wrapper is clean and bright with slight soiling and edge wear, spine faded. Overall a good only copy with a bit better dust wrapper. The irascible, irritable Abbey went on to much greater fame as an environmentalist but his literary career began here with his alter ego of Jonathan Troy. As is well known he disavowed the novel in later years and it was never reprinted. In his mind it was a youthful indiscretion better left forgotten.

Description:
Harper & Brothers, New York and London, 1924 Octavo, bound in original slate gray cloth with gilt titles, 294 pp., including index. Top edge stained yellow. Stated first edition in the RARE ORIGINAL DUST WRAPPER. Offsetting from old moisture damage, evidenced by a white residue mark running the width of the rear cover, approximately one inch from the top edge. The damage mirrors a stain on the wrapper's rear panel and spine. The stain, while noticeable, is less detracting than one might expect, not affecting the spine of the book itself, that is otherwise fine and bright. There is other minor soiling and wear to the dust wrapper, but it is unfaded and complete, lettered in navy blue against a pale turquoise ground. '"Price $4.00" is printed on the inner flap along with a list of Harper publications on psychology and psychoanalysis. The back flap and rear panel also serve as advertisements for current Harper publications. The front cover of the dust wrapper, however, is fully dedicated to the promotion… Read More

Description:
Whiteside County, Illinois, no publisher, Circa 1890. This is the very scarce second printing of the rare Daniel Blue booklet originally published in 1860. This edition was done, circa 1890 in Morrison, Illinois although there is no indication of publisher or date in the booklet other than Whiteside County, Il and 1860. This edition has 21 pages versus the 23 of the first edition and does not contain the Chicago imprint of the Evening Journal Steam Print. Bound in the original drab brown wrappers, clean, but well thumbed, staples rusting with several leaves loose, covers creased and a bit dogeared but overall a better than good copy of an unusual item. Only three copies of the 1860 edition are known to exist. Eberstadt 114:89, Graff 333n, Howes B552, Not in Wagner-Camp, unrecorded by Sabin.
The story is well known how the author and his two brothers and two other men set out for the Colorado gold fields. Two hundred miles beyond Fort Riley they lost their pack horse and another member of the… Read More

Description:
The Roycrofters, East Aurora, New York, 1906 Octavo, 107 pages, Number 47 of 106 copies printed on Japan Vellum and signed by Elbert Hubbard. A pristine copy bound in three-quarter morocco over marbled boards, likely done by Louis Herman Kinder. Six paneled spine, gilt, one with title, one with the author's names and four with lovely stylized daisies and foliage, dated 1906 at the bottom. Top edge gilt. Decorative double title page, colophon and head pieces designed by Dard Hunter, executed in burnt orange and black. Portraits of Alice and Elbert on facing pages. The extraordinary condition of the book is due to the presence of the original felt-lined clamshell box and fragile glassine wrapper. The box, although quite worn on all of the edges remains complete with titled paper label. The glassine wrapper is also worn, with several tears and chips but both flaps are still present. It is rare indeed to find a copy of this book with both the box and glassine wrapper still present. A stellar copy of one… Read More
