" pp 208 ; internally very good subject to slight browning, signature of an Anne Walker on the blank sheet preceding the title page. Binding firm subject to that sheet deached Cover, which looks to be contemporary, somewhat worn but still sound ; joins between boards and spine cracked but holding.

London, 1679 This trial was a consequence of the Popish Plot. Sir George Wakeman ( physician to the Queen), William Marshall , William Rumley and James Corker ( Benedictine Monks), were accused by Titus Oates and others of conspiring to murder King Charles II. They were tried on 18 July 1679 and acquitted after the jury had been instructed that it could not find them guilty of misprision of high treason (ie having knowledge but without necessarily involvement in the offence). After the trial Wakeman left the country and Rumley was found to be a lay brother. However Marshall and Corker were promptly rearrested for being priests; although convicted and sentenced to death they were not executed but were imprisoned until the accession of James 11 in 1685 . pp (4) + 84. Internally very good subject to some inoffensive marking and staining. Recently rebound in quarter leather.

An account of the trial of French cavalry officer Emile François Guillaume, comte Clément de La Roncière (1803-1874). The victim of a legal scandal, he later became the 8th French governor of Tahiti. Very scarce. In Good+ Condition: light foxing throughout; several page opened carelessly; otherwise, clean and solid.

Illustrating the evolution in papermaking at this time, in printing this book he was using paper from multiple sources, some signatures printed on laid paper and others on wove. In lower half of title page: "by Charles Ingersoll." No publication information. Charles Ingersoll (1805-1882) was the son of Charles Jared Ingersoll (1782-1862), both lawyers in Philadelphia. Charles Ingersoll was the author of several other publications on legal matters. Although opposed by the author of this publication, whether Charles Ingersoll or another, the joint resolution led to an amendment of the Pennsylvania constitution in 1850 introducing the elective judiciary to the state. In the upper right-hand corner of the title page is the partially cropped signature of Craig Biddle (1823-1910), who was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1850 and later a judge.
