London: Simpkin and Marshal et al., 1834. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine in a Fine slipcase. Original brown cloth, recently rebacked retaining nearly all of the original spine; spine label mostly lacking. A Presentation copy INSCRIBED by the author on the front blank: "To/William Wordsworth Esq./with the author's/compliments." In addition this copy is SIGNED by the recipient on the title page: "W Wordsworth/Rydal Mount." In this volume, and in a second that was issued the following year, Ord attempted a history of England in verse. His efforts were not well received. One reviewer in THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE claimed "that the author has formed his manner and style too much on that of Lord Byron in exaggeration, impetuosity, and a perpetual straining for effect." A scarce book from Wordsworth's library. Old bookseller description laid in. Housed in a new calf-backed slipcase with cloth chemise.

Large scene of knight in armour on titlepage + full-page allegorical plate of three graces and flying Mercury signed I A [Jost Amman] & MF +156 full-page woodcuts of men in armour with their shield coats of arms.. Folio in morocco spined boards (tips bit worn). Title in red & black + 2pp (preface and intro) + captioned full page plate as half title (numbered p3) +4-162pp +[2]pp (colophon with large printer's emblem and blank verso), but seems to lack a final blank leaf. At page 55 is a full-page half title with over 30 figures while at page 103 and 145 are divisional titles with large decorative tailpieces. Amsterdam: Anthos, 1998. Signed first edition of rare English language Dutch edition of Irving's novel. The true first edition of Irving's novel, preceding the release of the US and UK editions. SIGNED presentation from Irving to motorcycle legend Cook Neilson, who took the photo of Irving that was used for the dust jacket of the book: "For Stepp and Cook - with my appreciation and affection - John Irving, April 1, 1998." Together with AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by Irving on his stationery to Neilson laid in, in which Irving says that Neilson's photos will also be used on the UK edition, and jokes that another photo, to be used for the American and Canadian editions is more flattering, because it doesn't show Irving's face. Closes with mention of a nearby school in Vermont. Neilson was a preeminent motorcycle journalist and editor of Cycle Magazine. Illustrated frontis of medieval poet Charles, Duke of Orleans [1394-1465], who, taken prisoner after the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. Many of his poems were written during his long captivity over a 25 year period. He wrote courtly and romantic poems set in ballad and rondeau forms. Very rare; we have not seen another signed copy of this book, let alone one signed by both authors and including a personal letter.Publishing house is listed as Charles Scribner's Sons New York on the inside, and has Bell on the spine of the dust jacket and the boards. Publishing location given as Great Britain. SBN is 684130939.Dust jacket is present with a bit of wear and minor tears on the edges. It is clipped. No stickers/residue. The boards show some wear in the form of small faded spots, mostly on the very edges not protected by the jacket. Cloth ties to top edge missing but the original ties to the fore and bottom edges are intact. Printed label on inside of front board with the limitation details and numbered and signed by Detmold. Every collector of the works of Cormac McCarthy knows the story - Cormac said he would not sign any copies of his Pulitzer prize winner The Road except for some that he had saved for his son, John. However, he did sign a very small number of bookplates which were supplied by the author's UK agent at the time of publication for distribution to major book stores.
This is the only legitimate signed version of The Road other than the few copies held by John McCarthy which have never been offered for sale. An extremely rare and sought-after item that will only gain in value over the years.

The book is an excellent copy in a fine dustjacket. Signed to a bookplate pasted on the title page. Mylar protected and cased in a quarter Morocco, custom-made, clamshell presentation box. A magnificent way to store what will be the prize item in your Cormac McCarthy collection.
