Illustrated by Jessie Willcox Smith. Half title page has signature of illustrator below a pasted 2" x 3" picture of her. This book was Smith's favorite of those she illustrated. Frontispiece color plate. Slight crease on page. Light foxing on prelims. Eleven additional color plates. Additional illustrations on nearly every page. Most are black and green line drawings. First thus. 362 pp.

Boston: WM. White & Co, 1872. Newspaper. Good. 15 x 21 inches newspaper, 3 issues: (1) Vol. XXVII, # 8, May 7, 1870; (2) Vol. XXXI # 1, March 16, 1872; (3) Vol. XXI, #22, August 10, 1872. Weekly newspaper regarding spiritualism. Includes ads for clairvoyants, mediums, medicine, etc. Each newspaper has some fraying at tops of pages, some stains but text is not obscured. Each newspaper is 8 pages. Banner of Light was published weekly from 1857 to 1907. It included articles on spiritualism, messages from medium Fanny Conant, letters from readers attesting to the authenticity of the messages, book reviews, and transcripts of lectures delivered by spiritualists.

Arthur Rackham. 8x 10 inches (20 x 25.5 cm), green cloth with gilt lettering and illustration on front and gilt lettering on spine, gilt on top page edges. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. 8 color plates plus numerous black and white illustrations. Previous owner's name on front free endpaper. There are two dust jackets. Outermost jacket has blue and red lettering on spine. Inner dust jacket has some green lettering on spine and large chip at top of spine obscuring most of the word "the". Both jacket have chips and small tears. This book is scarce in dust jacket. 103 pp.

Nashville: Union and American Steam Press, 1854. First Edition. Cloth. Good +. Brown blind stamped cloth, gilt lettering on spine, lettering partly obscured from wear on spine edge. Foxing throughout. Back hinge is starting to separate but still attached. 276 pp. As of September 2021 no other copies are found in the trade. First Edition.

Boston: John P. Jewett, 1855. First American Edition. Cloth. Good. Brown cloth, with blind stamp illustrations on cover and spine, and gold lettering on spine. Front flyleaf has two library stickers. One is a bookplate that says, "Library of the Boys' High School, Portsmouth, NH, presented by Frank P. Newton." Frank P. Newton is written in cursive but it is in someone else's writing. Something is pasted partially on top of the bookplate obscuring the word Boys'. There are four different (library) numerals on that page. On front free flyleaf is pasted in a letter stating, "This book was bequeathed to the Boys' High School by Frank P. Newton of the class of 1865 who died, February 20, 1866... " The handwriting is the same as the writing on the bookplate. Rear endpaper has brown paper glued, presumably a library pocket. Stain from residue on rear free endpaper. Both volumes have previous owner's name on front free flyleaf. Volume I has a few letters written in pencil, pages have foxing. Volume I has ads for eight other books between flyleaf and title page. Volume II has two pages of ads for others books before title page. Volume I has 243 pp., Vol II has 236 pp. First American Edition.

London: Hodder and Stoughton. Cloth. Very good. Edmund Dulac. 10 x 7.5 inches (25.5 x 19 cm), green cloth, with gilt lettering and illustrations on front and spine. Wear to cloth on front, a few white marks on back, wear to head and foot of spine, edges and corners. Between front end paper and half title, the paper is partly separted from the inner hinge but still intact. There are 40 color plates illustrated by Edmund Dulac. Black and white illustrations at the beginning of each act. There is a prose description of the story written by A. T. Quiller-Couch. v-xxiv, 143pp.

Bantam Book # 1148. Signed on title page "Claire Morgan PH." Also signed "Marijane Meaker, author of "Highsmith." The Price of Salt is the first lesbian romance novel that doesn't end in death, suicide, or conversion to heterosexuality. This book was written under a pseudonym by Patricia Highsmith, author of "Strangers on a Train" and the Ripley novels. The Price of Salt was the basis for the movie "Carol." By signing the novel with the initials PH, she is tipping her hat to those who know who Claire Morgan really was. Marijane Meaker was a prolific writer of lesbian pulps writing under various pen names, including Ann Aldrich and Vin Packer. In 2003 she wrote "Highsmith: A Romance of the 1950's," about a relationship she had with Patricia Highsmith. 249 pp.
