Herodotou Logoi Ennea, hoi per Epikalountai Mousai [Graece:] Herodoti Libri novem quibus musarum indita sunt nomina, Clio. Euterpe. Talia. Melpomene. Terpsichore. Erato. Polymnia. Urania. Calliope. Basileae Apud, Nicolaum Brylingerum M.D.LV. And Colophon Cc6 verso: Basileae, per Ioannem Hervagium et Bernardum Bran, Anno salutis humanae M.D.LVII. Mense Martio.
Basileae Apud, Nicolaum Brylingerum M.D.L.V (1555), and Colophon (Cc6, verso); Basileae, per Ioannem Hervagium et Bernardum Brand, Anno salutis humanae M.D. LVII. (1557) Mese Martio.
Folio, 200 x 310 mm. a8, a-z6, A-Z6, Aa-Ii6, k4, Ll6, II; a6, b4, a-z6, Aa-Cc6 Both the Greek and Latin texts for this edition of Xenophon's works on the 1553 edition of Sebastian Castalio (1515-1563) who also translated the Politeia Athenaion in this edition. The Latin text features the work of various notable humanist scholars including Francisco Filelfo, John Cardinal Bessarion, Camerarius and Erasmus. Second Herwagen edition of Herodotus (the first issued in 1541) and the third printing of the Greek text (editio princeps: Aldus 1502). Edited and with a preface in Latin by Joachim Camerarius (1500-1574) including a brief analysis of the Ionic dialect. This edition also includes a compilation of extracts from Plutarch and Diodrus on the repercussions of the battle of Mantinea by George Gemisthus Pletho (1360-1452). These works are bound together in contemporary alum-tawed pigskin over beveled wooden boards with the date 1560 stamped on the upper board. Both boards have been heavily and intricately decorated with ruled compartments, floral toolings, miniature portrait medallions and rolls of four figures: Suavitas, Iusticia, Prudenc (sic) and Lucretia with a sword to her breast. The corners of both boards have been fitted with corner plates with flat-topped bosses. There are two bullet-shaped beveled catch plates for the clasps. The lower clasp is missing but replaced. The central compartment of the rear board is scuffed. Two early ownership inscriptions appear in the lower right corner of the Xenophon title-page. Reddish-brown manuscript annotations in Latin and Greek in the margins of both texts (in the same hand). Some additional early underlining and annotations on the first four pates of text in the Herodotus. Very slight worm trail (less that 1/4 inch) on upper edge of the Xenophon title page affecting the first 3 leaves only with no loss of lettering. The title page of the Xenophon has been reinforced along the inner margin. The fore-edges of the first few leaves are slightly frayed. The corners of the text block are slightly rounded.
Overall this is a stunning edition in Greek and Latin and it is extremely rare to find a copy so well intact in its original binding. Books printed in Greek were rare and are rapidly becoming harder to acquire due to the propensity of libraries to archive these books for graduate studies and for collection purposes.
