Of Mice and Men Paperback - 1993
by John Steinbeck
About this book
An intimate portrait of two men who cherish the slim bond between them and the dream they share in a world marred by petty tyranny, misunderstanding, jealousy, and callousness. Clinging to each other in their loneliness and alienation, George and his simple-minded friend Lennie dream, as drifters will, of a place to call their own-a couple of acres and a few pigs, chickens, and rabbits back in Hill Country where land is cheap. But after they come to work on a ranch in the fertile Salinas Valley of California, their hopes, like "the best-laid schemes o' mice an' men," begin to go awry. Of Mice and Men explores themes of human interaction, dependence, and the damaging effects of isolation. (Goodreads)
Summary
Laborers in California's dusty vegetable fields, they hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence. For George and Lennie have a plan: to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own. When they land jobs on a ranch in the Salinas Valley, the fulfillment of their dream seems to be within their grasp. But even George cannot guard Lennie from the provocations of a flirtatious woman, nor predict the consequences of Lennie's unswerving obedience to the things George taught him.
"A thriller, a gripping tale . . . that you will not set down until it is finished. Steinbeck has touched the quick." —The New York Times
Reader reviews for Of Mice and Men
Review summary
Readers largely regard John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men as a short, searing classic whose plainspoken prose and vivid scene-setting deliver an outsized emotional punch. Praise focuses on its compassionate yet unsentimental portrait of George and Lennie, its themes of friendship, loneliness, and the fragility of the American Dream, and a taut, play-like structure that builds to a devastating ending. Many admired the symbolism, dialogue, and character nuance, while warning that the book is relentlessly bleak. A recurring critique targets the treatment of Curley’s wife—kept nameless and filtered through male perspectives—which some felt edges into victim-blaming. Despite debates over that portrayal and the darkness of the story, the consensus deems it essential, memorable, and remarkably powerful for its length.
