About this book
Reader reviews for The Count of Monte Cristo
Review summary
Readers widely lauded The Count of Monte Cristo as a sprawling, compulsively readable epic of revenge that feels brisk despite its daunting length. The serialized, soap-operatic design—with disguises, conspiracies, cliffhangers, and rich Napoleonic context—drew praise for intricate plotting and atmosphere, even as some found it overlong, convoluted, or padded. Edmond Dantès/Monte Cristo stood out as an iconic, emotionally compelling figure, and the novel’s probing of justice versus vengeance, moral limits, and the credo to “wait and hope” resonated strongly. Critiques centered on uneven characterization, implausibilities, the Haydée romance, and collateral damage from the Count’s schemes. Many recommended unabridged editions (often modern translations) or audiobooks, concluding that the payoff is rich and enduring.
