A Christmas Carol Paperback - 2001
by Charles Dickens
About this book
The publication of the first edition was fraught with complications, and even though the book was received to positive reviews, profits of the book fell far below Dickens' expectations, and the financial strain caused rifts between Dickens and the original publisher, Chapman & Hall.
Reader reviews for A Christmas Carol
Review summary
Readers regard Dickens’s novella as the quintessential Christmas tale—short, re-readable, and emotionally restorative. They praise its brisk, vivid prose and memorable characters, the deft blend of humor and gothic eeriness, and the elegant three-ghost structure that makes Scrooge’s redemption feel earned. Its social conscience—an insistence on empathy over avarice—still feels urgent, and its lines and scenes translate seamlessly to countless adaptations. A minority find the style florid or the ending sentimental, but the prevailing view is that it remains a timeless, atmospheric, and uplifting work.
