Reader reviews for Rebecca T
Review summary
Readers broadly praised the novel’s lush, atmospheric prose and gothic setting, often noting Manderley feels like a character in its own right. Many felt the first half moves slowly—rich in description and the narrator’s anxious reveries—before a gripping, twist-driven second half accelerates the plot. The unnamed heroine divided opinion: some admired the intimate psychological portrait and her subtle maturation; others found her naïve, passive, and exasperating. Maxim’s aloofness and the story’s moral gray areas sparked debate, while Mrs. Danvers and Rebecca’s pervasive, offstage presence were widely lauded as chilling. Some arrived expecting supernatural horror and were disappointed; most instead valued the psychological suspense, ambiguity, and an ending viewed as either abrupt or electrifying. Overall, it’s regarded as a distinctive, enduring classic, though a minority found it overrated or dull.
