ActivEpi is a complete a multimedia presentation on CD-ROM of the material found in an introductory epidemiology course.. Created by David G. Kleinbaum, a very successful textbook author and internationally reknown teacher of epidemiology and biostatistics, ActivEpi includes 15 lessons and over 50 hours of content. ActivEpi can be used in a variety of teaching formats: distance learning, self-paced learning on-campus courses, and short courses. Also, virtually all of the textual material on the ActivEpi CD-ROM is included in the ActivEpi Companion Textbook, which is also available for purchase from Springer.
The ActivEpi CD uses: .
- A full array of media (e.g., video, animation, audio) to motivate, explain, visualize and apply epidemiological concepts
- Narrated Expositions to teach the concepts using high-quality audio synchronized with text, pictures and animations.
- Quizzes to provide self-evaluation of basic terms and concepts
- Data Desk to provide practice applying the methods learned to real data.
- Navigational Tools such as a dynamic table of contents, index and glossary, to allow easy-to-use methods for working through the content.
- Web Links to augment the material on the CD with complementary content authored by others.

ActivEpi requires that QuickTime be installed on your computer. QuickTime plays videos and animations on the computer screen. If you use a Windows-based computer, Quicktime 3.0 or better is required. ActivEpi will not work with earlier versions of QuickTime for Windows. If your Windows system does not include Quicktime 3.0 or better, you can install QuickTime 4.0 from your ActivEpi CD-ROM. Right mouse click on the ActivEpi CD-ROM icon and choose the Open command. Double-click on the directory labeled Install QuickTime and then the icon labeled QuickTimeInstaller.exe and follow the instructions on your screen.
If you use a Macintosh-based computer, QuickTime 2.5 or better is required. If your Macintosh system does not include Quicktime, you can install it from your ActivEpi CD-ROM. Double-click on the ActivEpi CD-ROM icon and then on the folder labeled "Install QuickTime". Double-click on the Installer icon and follow the instructions on your screen.
