Review summary
Reader response to Hamlet is sharply divided. Enthusiasts celebrate its psychological nuance, quotable verse, and breadth of interpretation, often reporting richer insights on reread or when paired with performances. Detractors fault the dense, archaic language and length, with several relying on modern translations or abandoning the play. Commentary clusters around uncertainty, mortality, deception, and a diseased polity, with debates over Hamlet’s paralysis and sanity and mixed feelings about Ophelia. Many encountered it in classrooms, where annotations, films, and audio made the experience more navigable and engaging.
