This little book is an attempt to apply the relevant doctrines of the Christian philosophy of war to the idea of a League of Nations. That philosophy was drawn from Holy Writ by S. Augustine Of Hippo, to whom Christian Europe owes a great, though tardily acknowledged debt, in that his teaching finally decided the much-debated question whether Christians could be loyal citizens of a secular state. Nor have we sufficiently acknowledged our great Obligations to S.' Thomas Aquinas, who gave precision and explicit ness to what had been left implicit and vague in S. Augustine's theories, and laid down lines of Christian thought which were only abandoned by Machiavelli and his numerous followers because they were antagonistic to the doctrines of self-interest in which the international policies of the last four hundred years have been too deeply dyed.
