Summary
Available for the first time in an edition for young adults, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's classic story, The Little Prince, beloved by readers of all ages, comes to life in a format perfect for teen readers.
“I’m glad I was asked to be the ambassador for this book.” —Gregory Maguire
“A lovely story…which covers a poetic, yearning philosophy—not the sort of fable that can be tacked down neatly at its four corners but rather reflections on what are real matters of consequence.” —New York Times Book Review
At first glance, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s 1943 classic The Little Prince—with its winsome illustrations of a boy prince and his tiny planet—appears to be a children’s fairy tale. It doesn’t take long, however, to discover that it speaks to readers of all ages. This pocket-sized edition, perfect for teens, features Saint-Exupéry’s original full-color illustrations and the unabridged text, a reader’s guide, and a introduction by Gregory Maguire. Rediscover—or share—the magic!

Reader reviews for The Little Prince
Review summary
Across these reviews, readers largely admire The Little Prince for its spare allegory and emotional impact, saying its reflections on childhood, love, responsibility, and the limits of “grown?up” thinking resonate well beyond its intended audience. Many praise its brevity, re-readability, and the charm of the author’s illustrations, with several reporting tears or a lingering sense of wistful wonder. A vocal minority found it opaque, repetitive, or structurally disjointed, and some disliked the Little Prince or the rose, reading the book’s critique of adults as simplistic or scolding. Translation and format were frequently cited as pivotal—several preferred the French original or specific audiobooks, while poor editions dulled the prose and art. Overall sentiment skews positive to very positive, with debate centered on whether its simplicity is profound or merely slight.

First edition identification
The first edition of The Little Prince was published in New York in 1943 by Reynal & Hitchcock. The American edition preceded the French or English editions, making it the sole means of obtaining a signed copy of the book. A limited number of 525 signed copies were produced, bound in salmon cloth, and stamped in maroon.
Shortly after the book's publication, the author, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a professional aviator, disappeared during a mission for the French Free Air Force over the Mediterranean Sea. As a result, this first edition became one of the most coveted limited editions and rarely surfaces in the marketplace.
Katherine Woods translated the book from French, and the author himself provided the illustrations. The original dust jacket bears the price of $2.00 and includes the publisher's address on Madison Avenue, New York, on the lower front flap.
