Hardcover. Good. [FIRST EDITION] Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1892. Small hardcover in off-white cloth boards with gilt lettering and designs. 70 pages illustrated with frontis-portrait and 8 "designs" by E. H. Garrett. FIRST THUS (first state of first trade edition with "Lapse tenderly away," illustration incorrectly listed on on page 64). One of Whittier's last publications, a collection of 18 poems, including Lydia Sigourney and O.W. Holmes. This is the first trade edition (after an earlier edition with the same title originally published in a privately printed edition of only 277 copies, for the author's friends, but containing only 11 poems and no illustrations.) Covers a bit soiled with spine toned, owner bookplate on front paste-down with off-setting to ffep, else very good overall condition. No marking, NOT EX-LIBRARY. (frnc)
