The Scholastic Atlas of the United States is an essential, up-to-date resource that offers children a large, detailed, full-color map of each of the fifty states plus the District of Columbia. Each map illustrates the major features of that state, including major cities, state capital, interstate highways, lakes, rivers, marshlands, forests, mountain systems, national parks, refuges, and Native American reservations. Vital statistics are listed below the map. Young researchers can discover their state's flower, tree, area, date of statehood, motto, population, and more.

Next to each map is an information page that describes those things that give each state its own character. The meaning and origin of each state's name as well as fascinating information about each state's people, way of life, and major industries are presented through photographs, graphics, and a brief essay.

Helpful appendices include maps of Atlantic possessions, Pacific possessions, U.S. population density, major U.S. river systems, U.S. geographic regions, and U.S. territorial expansion. An index is also included.
