Gabrielle Zevin’s novel drew sharply divided reactions. Admirers lauded it as an inventive, emotionally resonant portrait of a decades-long creative partnership, using video-game culture as both milieu and metaphor. They praised its supple prose, structural risks (including embedded game chapters and occasional second-person), and the depth of its central trio—especially Marx—finding the book moving, nostalgic, and intellectually engaging even for some non-gamers. Detractors found the style overwrought or pretentious, the Sam–Sadie bond too dependent on miscommunication and toxicity, and Marx implausibly idealized.
