Readers widely praised Abbey’s vivid, finely observed depictions of the Utah desert and his fervent defense of wild places, with some calling the book a defining portrait of Arches before mass tourism. Many, however, objected to his swaggering, superior tone and frequent tirades, as well as language and views on women, disabled people, and Native Americans that feel offensive and dated. The result is a much-admired piece of nature writing whose polemics and persona proved alienating for a significant share of readers, with a few abandoning it.

About the author

Edward Abbey was born in Home, Pennsylvania, in 1927. He was educated at the University of New Mexico and the University of Edinburgh. He died at his home in Oracle, Arizona, in 1989.
