First line
An extract from A House in the Hamptons by Gloria Nagy:
"Harry? Harry Hart?"
Harry turned, ever so slowly, sucking in air through his mouth.
"Madeline?"
A blond bunny rabbit stood grinning before him. Complete with red runny nose and white furry earmuffs. A platinum blond bunny wrapped in a bank of white fur. She threw her arms around his neck threatening, for the second time in just moments, his air supply. She squeezed tight, her fur and Fifties perfume making him faint with panic.
The furry woman giggled, and removed her white fuzzy earmuffs with one white leather paw. "Oh, jeez, that sounds so funny. No one calls me that. Not since high school!"...
Harry guided his white rabbitess to a table by the window. He felt dizzy, nauseous and confused. He had no idea what he had expected, but furry and cheerful was not it.
Madeline wiggled out of her coat, revealing almost the same body carved in Harry's memory. The body was also encased in white. Cashmere, he thought. Expensive, but really Hollywood, his wife would think. Tight white cashmere skirt and sweater. Diamond rings. Diamond earrings under the earmuffs. Sonja Henie without the ice. A winter wonderland, he thought. Maybe she had lifted and tucked, maybe it was just good genes, but she looked almost the same. A thinking man's version of her girlhood self. He was speechless.
Gloria Nagy's delicious satire of New York leisured life could be the beach read of the summer.
