Readers largely praised V.E. Schwab’s elegant, immersive prose and the novel’s core idea—an immortal woman whom no one can remember—along with its reflections on memory, art, freedom, and identity. Many admired the tense Addie–Luc dynamic and noted the audiobook narration as a standout. A sizable minority, however, criticized the pacing as slow and repetitive, found the plot thin, and wanted richer historical breadth beyond Euro-American settings. Henry and the central romance divided opinion—deeply moving for some, inert or YA-leaning for others. The nonlinear structure worked for some and felt disjointed for others. The ending was celebrated by many but struck others as predictable or frustratingly open.
