Readers were split on this seventh installment: many labeled it the start of the series’ slowdown, citing minimal plot advancement and languid pacing, while others enjoyed the richer character work and sweeping worldbuilding. Mat’s chapters were widely praised as standout segments, Rand’s darker trajectory drew interest, and the arrival of Cadsuane intrigued many. Conversely, the Ebou Dar/Bowl of the Winds arc and Aes Sedai infighting were often described as tedious, with frequent complaints about repetitive prose tics and excessive attention to clothing and mannerisms. A major flashpoint was the depiction of women and a coercive Tylin–Mat storyline that numerous readers explicitly called rape, exacerbated by how other characters responded to it. The finale struck some as rushed or anticlimactic, yet cliffhangers kept many eager to continue, even as a minority walked away and the “slog” debate intensified.

About the author

ROBERT JORDAN (1948-2007) is best known for his internationally bestselling epic fantasy series The Wheel of Time(R), which has sold over 40 million copies in North America and is currently being adapted for the screen. A native of Charleston, Jordan graduated from The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, with a degree in physics. He served two tours in Vietnam with the U.S. Army and received multiple decorations for his service.
