Summary
"It began as a mistake." By middle age, Henry Chinaski has lost more than twelve years of his life to the U.S. Postal Service. In a world where his three true, bitter pleasures are women, booze, and racetrack betting, he somehow drags his hangover out of bed every dawn to lug waterlogged mailbags up mud-soaked mountains, outsmart vicious guard dogs, and pray to survive the day-to-day trials of sadistic bosses and certifiable coworkers. This classic 1971 novel—the one that catapulted its author to national fame—is the perfect introduction to the grimly hysterical world of legendary writer, poet, and Dirty Old Man Charles Bukowski and his fictional alter ego, Chinaski.

Description:
Black Sparrow Press, 2002. Trade Paperback. Very Good/No Jacket. A SUPERB PRESENTATION COPY of the very scarce first edition, first printing of the original Black Sparrow Press edition (Los Angeles, 1971), of one of Charles Bukowski's greatest works. James ('Jimmy') Pitts, an important friend of Bukowski's in this era: 'For Jimmy Pitts - some renditions of the hell-machine- Charles Bukowski 3-1-71.' A very good copy in the original blue printed wraps, with tight binding (slight fading to spine, slight overall wear). A Fellow writer Jimmy Pitts was an important early correspondent of Bukowski's. Bukowski's letters to Pitts, long missing, have recently resurfaced, and provide important new light on Bukowski's low and high points at the moment where his writing career and life went from struggle to success. His association with Pitts was significant. Krumhansl #38, one of 2001 copies issued.
