Reader reviews for The Castle Of Otranto, A Gothic Story: With A Memoir Of The Author (1840)

From the publisher

The Castle of Otranto is a Gothic story written by Horace Walpole in 1764. The novel is set in a medieval castle and tells the story of the tyrannical lord of the castle, Manfred, who seeks to secure his family's power by marrying his son to a noblewoman. However, things take a dark turn when a giant helmet falls from the sky and crushes his son on his wedding day. This event triggers a series of supernatural occurrences, including ghostly apparitions and mysterious disappearances, that threaten the castle and its inhabitants. The novel is considered to be the first Gothic novel, and it features many of the genre's characteristic elements, such as a gloomy setting, supernatural events, and an atmosphere of terror and suspense. The Castle of Otranto has been widely influential in the development of Gothic literature and has inspired many subsequent works in the genre. The 1840 edition of the novel also includes a memoir of the author, Horace Walpole, who was a prominent figure in 18th-century English literature and a member of the aristocratic Walpole family. The memoir provides insights into Walpole's life and literary career, as well as his motivations for writing The Castle of Otranto. Overall, this edition of the novel offers readers a fascinating glimpse into the origins of Gothic literature and the life of one of its most important pioneers. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
