Reader reviews for The Persians

From the publisher

The Persians is a Greek tragedy written by Aeschylus that portrays the aftermath of the Persian Wars from a Persian perspective. The play is set in the Persian capital of Susa and follows the chorus of Persian elders as they mourn the loss of their army and King Xerxes, who led the failed invasion of Greece. The play also features the ghost of King Darius, Xerxes' father, who offers a warning about the dangers of hubris and the consequences of overreaching. The Persians is unique among Greek tragedies in that it portrays the enemy as human and sympathetic, rather than as a caricature or monster. The play explores themes of pride, power, and the inevitability of fate, and offers a poignant reminder of the human cost of war.The mighty Xerxes from Darius sprung, The stream of whose rich blood flows in our veins, Leads against Greece; whether his arrowy shower Shot from the strong-braced bow, or the huge spear High brandish'd, in the deathful field prevails. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
