Reader reviews for The Reign Of Greed

From the publisher

The Reign of Greed is a novel written by the Philippine national hero, Jose Rizal. It is a story that exposes the corruption and greed of the Spanish colonial government during the late 19th century in the Philippines. The novel is set in the fictional town of Sagpang, where the main character, Juan Crisostomo Ibarra, returns from Europe to find his father's death and the injustices committed by the Spanish authorities.Ibarra, who is a wealthy and educated man, tries to bring about social and political reforms to the town. However, his efforts are met with resistance from the corrupt officials who are more interested in maintaining their power and wealth. The novel also features other characters such as Elias, a Filipino rebel who fights against the Spanish, and Maria Clara, Ibarra's love interest, who is forced into a convent by her father. The Reign of Greed is a powerful commentary on the social and political issues that plagued the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period. It is a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices made by the Filipino people to gain their independence and freedom. But he suddenly checked himself, as if he had said too much and wished to correct his imprudence. ""The government has given us things that we have not asked for, and that we could not ask for, because to ask--to ask, presupposes that it is in some way incompetent and consequently is not performing its functions. To suggest to it a course of action, to try to guide it, when not really antagonizing it, is to presuppose that it is capable of erring, and as I have already said to you such suppositions are menaces to the existence of colonial governments. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
