On each Side of the shield there may be supporters (the lion and the unicorn on either Side of the British arms are the sup porters). The right to supporters is very restricted, and many persons bear them without proper authority to do so. The rules relating to supporters are that they must only be borne by members of the Royal Family, Peers, Knights of the Garter, the higher ranks of the Bath, of the Star of India, Nova Scotia Baronets and some few others, and must not be assumed by any one bearing arms without the sanction of the authorities of Heralds' College.
