Readers widely praised Anthony Doerr’s evocative prose, vivid sensory detail, and humane portraits of Marie-Laure and Werner, noting the short, alternating chapters as propulsive. Many also valued the novel’s radio-and-science motif and its view of WWII from both occupied France and a reluctant German perspective. However, a significant number found the non-linear structure confusing and the pacing slow, especially mid-book.
