Reader reviews for The Sea Wolf

From the publisher

The Sea Wolf is a novel written by Jack London, first published in 1904. The story follows the journey of Humphrey van Weyden, a literary critic who finds himself stranded on a seal hunting ship, the Ghost, after the ferry he was travelling on sinks. The Ghost is captained by the brutal and enigmatic Wolf Larsen, who rules over the crew with an iron fist. As Humphrey adapts to life on the ship, he becomes embroiled in a power struggle between Larsen and his brother, Death Larsen, who seeks to overthrow him. Along the way, Humphrey also falls in love with Maud Brewster, a fellow passenger who was also rescued from the ferry. The Sea Wolf is a gripping adventure story that explores themes of power, survival, and the struggle between civilization and the wilderness. It is considered one of Jack London's most popular and enduring works.1904. American writer (real name John Griffith London). London grew up in poverty, earning a living through various legal and illegal means. He was a sailor and took part in the Klondike gold rush. These experiences provided much of the material for his works and also made him a socialist. The Call of the Wild, the classic story of sled-dog Buck brought him instant celebrity and established his readership to this day. In The Sea-Wolf, London's most gripping novel, Humphrey Van Weyden is rescued from the freezing waters of San Francisco Bay by a demonic sea captain and introduced to fates far worse than death. Through this story London recalls his own adventures on a sealing vessel at the age of seventeen. First line

I SCARCELY know where to begin, though I sometimes facetiously place the cause of it all to Charley Furuseth's credit.
