Reader reviews for Anabasis

From the publisher

Anabasis is a historical account written by the ancient Greek writer Xenophon. The book tells the story of a group of Greek mercenaries who were hired by Cyrus the Younger to help him overthrow his brother, King Artaxerxes II of Persia. The mercenaries, led by Cyrus and Xenophon, embarked on a perilous journey through the heart of the Persian Empire, facing numerous challenges and battles along the way. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Greeks managed to defeat the Persian army in several major battles, but ultimately Cyrus was killed in battle and the Greeks found themselves stranded in enemy territory. The rest of the book details their arduous journey back to Greece, as they battled hostile tribes, harsh terrain, and treacherous allies. Anabasis is considered a classic of ancient Greek literature and is widely regarded as one of the greatest adventure stories of all time. It is also an important historical document, providing valuable insights into the political and military landscape of ancient Greece and Persia. When they heard these tidings, the generals were sorely distressed; so 4 too were the rest of the Hellenes when they were informed of it. Then Clearchus spoke as follows: ""Would that Cyrus were yet alive! But since he is dead, take back this answer to Ariaeus, that we, at any rate, have conquered the king; and, as you yourselves may see, there is not a man left in the field to meet us.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
