Summary

From the book:IT IS NATURAL to believe in great men. If the companions of our childhood should turn out to be heroes, and their condition regal it would not surprise us. All mythology opens with demigods, and the circumstance is high and poetic; that is, their genius is paramount. In the legends of the Gautama, the first men ate the earth and found it deliciously sweet. Nature seems to exist for the excellent. The world is upheld by the veracity of good men: they make the earth wholesome. They who lived with them found life glad and nutritious. Life is sweet and tolerable only in our belief in such society; and, actually or ideally, we manage to live with superiors. We call our children and our lands by their names. Their names are wrought into the verbs of language, their works and effigies are in our houses, and every circumstance of the day recalls an anecdote of them.

Reader reviews for Representative Men

From the publisher

Representative Men is a collection of seven essays written by American philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. Each essay focuses on a different historical figure who Emerson believed embodied certain qualities or ideals that were representative of their time and culture. The individuals featured in the essays include Plato, Emanuel Swedenborg, Michel de Montaigne, William Shakespeare, Napoleon Bonaparte, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and Ralph Waldo Emerson himself. Emerson's essays explore the lives and works of these individuals, examining their impact on history and their contributions to society. Through his analysis, he seeks to uncover the common threads that connect these representative men and their ideas, and to draw lessons from their experiences that are relevant to contemporary society. Overall, Representative Men is a thought-provoking and insightful collection of essays that offers a unique perspective on some of the most influential figures in history. It is a must-read for anyone interested in philosophy, literature, or history.AMONG eminent persons, those who are most dear to men are not of the class which the economist calls producers: they have nothing in their hands; they have not cultivated corn, nor made bread; they have not led out a colony, nor invented a loom. A higher class, in the estimation and love of this city-building market-going race of mankind, are the poets. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
