Reader reviews for The Shooting Party

From the publisher

Written early in his career, "The Shooting Party" was Anton Chekhov's first and only full-length novel, a murder mystery whose narrative devices would inform his later work and influence the work of legendary mystery writer Agatha Christie. The narrator of the story, a local magistrate in a rural region, is in love with Olga, the young and beautiful daughter of Nikolai Efimych, the elderly administrator of the estate of Count Alexei. Olga in order to advance her position in life marries Urbenin, a middle-aged widower with two children who is good friends with Count Alexi and consequently finds herself torn between her desire for upward mobility and her true love for the narrator of the story. While "The Shooting Party" may not rise to the literary value of many of Chekhov's later works it is indeed a pleasurable read which exhibits the early development of Chekhov's literary style.
