Maus es la biografa de Vladek Spiegelman, un judo polaco superviviente de los campos de exterminio nazis, contada a travs de su hijo Art, un dibujante de cmics que quiere dejar memoria de la aterradora persecucin que sufrieron millones de personas en la Europa sometida por Hitler y de las consecuencias de este sufrimiento en la vida cotidiana de las generaciones posteriores. Apartndose de las formas de literatura creadas hasta la publicacin de Maus, Art Spiegelman se aproxima al tema del Holocausto de un modo absolutamente renovador, y para ello relata la experiencia de su propia familia en forma de memoria grfica, utilizando todos los recursos estilsticos y narrativos tradicionales de este gnero y, a la vez, inventando otros nuevos.

A story of a Jewish survivor of Hitler's Europe and his son, a cartoonist who tries to come to terms with his father's story and history itself. Its form, the cartoon (the Nazis are cats, the Jews mice), succeeds perfectly in shocking us out of any lingering sense of familiarity with the events described, approaching, as it does, the unspeakable through the diminutive. Genuinely tragic and comic by turns, it attains a complexity of theme and a precision of thought new to comics and rare in any medium. Mausties together two powerful stories: Vladek's harrowing take of survival against all odds, delineating the paradox of family life in the death camps, and the author's account of his tortured relationship with his aging father. At every level this is the ultimate survivor's tale--and that too of the children who somehow survive even the survivors

About the author

ART SPIEGELMAN naci el 15 de febrero de 1948 en Estocolmo, aunque creci y se educ en Estados Unidos. Tras estudiar arte y diseo, en 1966 comenz a trabajar en la Topps Gum Co., empresa con la que colabor durante casi veinte aos y para la que cre ilustraciones de pegatinas y cromos, entre otros productos. De esa poca datan, por ejemplo, sus ilustraciones de La pandilla basura. Simultneamente, se inici en la publicacin de cmics underground y as comenz a explorar los convencionalismos expresivos del medio.

A partir de 1975, y despus de regresar a Nueva York tras una temporada en San Francisco, empez a trabajar para diversas publicaciones, como The New York Times, The Village Voice y Playboy, entre otras. Ms tarde, trabaj como profesor en la School of Visual Arts, y en 1980 fund junto con su mujer, Franoise Mouly, la revista Raw, en la que se public originalmente Maus.

En 1992 se le otorg el prestigioso Premio Pulitzer por esta obra. En la actualidad, Spiegelman es dibujante, colaborador y editor adjunto de la revista The New Yorker.
