Michael Bond (1926 – 2017)

His most iconic creation is none other than the beloved Paddington Bear. With over 35 million Paddington books sold worldwide, Bond's endearing character has also graced the big screen in a popular film series and entertained audiences on television.

Bond's literary journey began during World War II, where he served both in the Royal Air Force and the Middlesex Regiment of the British Army. His passion for writing ignited in 1945, while stationed in Cairo. His first short story found its way into the pages of London Opinion magazine, earning him a modest sum of seven guineas. This initial taste of success fueled his desire to become a writer.

In 1958, Bond's enchanting tale, "A Bear Called Paddington," was published by Collins. This marked the birth of the endearing bear from Darkest Peru, who arrived at Paddington Station with a suitcase, a label reading "Please look after this bear," and a penchant for adventure. The Paddington series captivated readers for nearly six decades, with Bond's final book published in 2017.

Beyond Paddington, Bond also penned stories about a spirited guinea pig named Olga da Polg and contributed to the animated BBC TV series The Herbs. Additionally, he dabbled in culinary mystery tales for adults, featuring the charming detective Monsieur Pamplemousse and his loyal bloodhound, Pommes Frites. Bond's legacy lives on, forever intertwined with the misadventures of a certain bear in a duffle coat and floppy hat.
